Liz Shares The Story Behind "Love Better"
A few years ago, my son Nick and I were interviewed on Good Morning Texas after the Mama Bears documentary premiered at the SXSW Film Festival.
The interviewer asked Nick what he thought made me—and the other moms featured in the documentary—willing to question and eventually change what we had always believed about LGBTQ+ people and same-sex relationships.
His answer caught me completely off guard.
Nick said:
“I think it’s the goal to love better. And so I think for us to be able to do that, we have to challenge ourselves. And I think it takes the strongest people in the world to admit that maybe they were wrong… That’s when you transition from conditional love to unconditional love.”
I still get teary-eyed when I hear those words.
In about sixty seconds, my son explained my own journey better than I ever had.
I didn’t change because I stopped believing in something.
I changed because I wanted to love my son well—and that required me to listen, to learn, to question things I had always believed, and to be willing to admit that maybe I had been wrong.
That’s what Love Better means to me.
It doesn’t mean we haven’t loved before. It means recognizing that love can ask more of us. It can ask us to listen more closely, learn something new, change our minds, open a door, show up for someone, or stand up when it would be easier to stay quiet.
We may not always know exactly what to do.
But we can keep asking ourselves one simple question:
How can I love better?
Because when we make loving better the goal, love has a way of changing us—and through us, changing the world.
